FHM Philippines...Nicole Asensio - September 2017

Long before she fronted the all-female rock band General Luna, Nicole Asensio honed her voice in musical theater. Armed with a melodic roar, the singer-songwriter eventually went solo, debuting with the album Schizoprano. Her musicality is ever-evolving yet timeless, a quality that makes her an authentic entertainer like no other.

Despite having crossed over different music disciplines a number of times, Nicole hasn't completely gotten over the high of rocking out with a band.

She tells us: “I do feel like it was time but that didn’t make it any easier because I didn’t know how to be a solo artist. I like being in a band. I do miss the girls. Being on the road, traveling together, getting to know each other so well that it hurts. I’m still in touch with a few of my General Luna bandmates.”

For Nicole, going solo doesn't necessarily mean that she has to operate alone. In her opinion, a healthy collaboration with others is the key to creativity.

“The truth is, I’m more used to working in a group, because I write collaboratively. Even if I am a solo artist by definition, yung galaw ko, pang-banda pa rin. That’s how I like to create," Nicole explains. "Right now, I work with session musicians. They’re all amazing—I have an all-star lineup. It’s nice because it keeps me on my toes. It forces me to adapt to their skills and music and gain and lose a little bit of myself in doing so.”

Aside from her ability to seamlessly work with other artists and musicians, the genius of Nicole's indubitable stage presence comes from her pipes. The soulful songstress has an otherworldly talent, a sound and voice that helps keep her in the limelight. Once you hear her sing, there's no question that she'll put you under a spell you wouldn't want to wake up from.
