This year's Finest in the Land, FHM Sexiest Woman in the Philippines Jessy Mendiola, is our muse this September. Her "Sexiest" win has finally culminated to an appearance on the pages of the magazine.
It has been a whirlwind year for the 23-year-old actress, who blew up social media with those beach photos, until eventually rising through the ranks of the country's sexiest.
Jessy's reign so far hasn't been entirely peaceful. Since the day of the fateful announcement, she has been hit by a wave of criticism online. The worst part about it, according to Jessy: "Most of them are [from] women."
Bewildered, she asks, "Why do we want to pull other people down instead of helping each other up, and especially among women? Can you not look at it in a very superficial way? Don't we already live in the year 2016? What happened to the 'change' that everyone says is coming? Let's make it happen."
Jessy knows the cost of fame and how harsh show business can be. Whereas she could handle a couple of negative comments, she admits that it's possible to falter from a few too many.
"Parang nakikita mo yung words, they all float in your head and in front of you," Jessy says of the hateful comments thrown her way. "But then you plant yourself on the ground again, and look at the people around, who are there to support you, and they tell you your strengths and weaknesses, they build you up again. And I think for me, that's where I get my strength."
Indeed, a woman like Jessy who sticks up for herself in the face of adversity (body-shaming) is more than deserving of the honor. Perhaps that quality was what compelled 589,792 people to vote for her.
Apart from Jessy, things take a serious turn in this month's issue, as we touch on matters of national relevance, bannered by an exclusive interview with Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa.
