When will young celebrities realize that nearly everything gets leaked on the Internet? The latest celebrity scandal involves Jennette McCurdy, star of Nickelodeon’s iCarly, whose semi-nude selfies were leaked online. She follows in the footsteps of Vanessa Hudgens and Dylan Sprouse.
By all accounts, McCurdy did not leak her selfies. She is accusing her former boyfriend, NBA player Andre Drummond, 20, because of the timing of the leak. She had appeared on a podcast “You Made It Weird,” in which she spoke critically of the basketball star’s kissing skills. It was shortly thereafter that her photos were leaked. Of course, Drummond denied her accusation, although McCurdy reportedly claims he was the only person to whom she sent her selfies.
Drummond published a video on Vine after the iCarly star’s podcast, saying, “Sometimes you gotta live and learn by the mistakes you make… You gotta move on and keep pushing.” He also tweeted that he had nothing to do with the leak, and was instead focused on basketball. When TMZ asked him about McCurdy’s negative comments about their brief fling, he said, “I found [Jennette's comments] funny. There’s a lot of false info in there, but I’ll be the mature person about the situation and let it die out.” That sounds like a pretty level-headed fellow, and in this scenario, he appears to be the mature one.
For all the complaints about how douchey sports figures are, it is pretty encouraging to hear about someone like Drummond, who reportedly demonstrated his romantic interest in the 21-year-old Jennette McCurdy on Twitter. She did not know who he was, but reluctantly agreed (emphasis on reluctantly) to go on a date with him. From her own mouth, she said their first date left her doubtful about whether she wanted to continue seeing him, but she agreed to do so. She did not appear particularly interested, even after he gave her a necklace and asked her, in a rather chivalrous manner, if she wanted to be exclusive. She agreed, although she reportedly said she did not want to be his girlfriend. From all appearances, it does not seem as if Drummond forced the iCarly star to be in a relationship. Then she breaks up with him a few days later–over the telephone. Their relationship lasted a mere week. Did something happen during this time that would force the leak of the semi-nude selfies?
McCurdy’s comments about Drummond on the podcast were mean-spirited. Maybe the guy was not a pro kisser but does that mean he deserved to be publicly ridiculed? Whatever possessed her to speak poorly of him in such a public manner? Nevertheless, he came out looking pretty good because he took the high road and did not lash out at her. Instead, he said he is focused on playing basketball.
By the way, Drummond is 20 years old. He has plenty of years of practice ahead of him in the art of kissing. Obviously, he and McCurdy were not an ideal match, because she was never interested in him in the first place, and only agreed to go out with him after she realized he was a pretty prominent figure in basketball. Sounds like an opportunist right there. We may never know who leaked the semi-nude selfies, but iCarly star Jennette McCurdy will not smell rosy after this.
